Consumer Grid Summit

Shaping Australia’s future grid: From diverse perspectives to a shared vision

The RACE for 2030 Consumer Grid Summit is an ongoing strategic initiative designed to systematically challenge and expand how Australia’s energy sector plans for tomorrow.

We ask leaders across government, industry, research, and advocacy to step out of their daily routines to explore disruptive, plausible futures for the electricity sector.

By bridging everyday consumer realities with whole-of-system strategy, the Summit helps define and unite a shared 2040 vision and takes a future-back approach to test legacy assumptions and co-design the practical, near-term pathways needed for a resilient, consumer-led grid.

Window of opportunity

Australia’s energy transition has reached a critical window of opportunity, with solar, batteries and electric vehicles rapidly reshaping how households and businesses interact with energy. The potential for the future grid to deliver better outcomes for all consumers has never been greater.

The challenge we face is that decisions are still happening in silos, and governance and market frameworks remain largely bound to legacy, centralised models. This creates a widening “transformation gap” that risks uneven access to the benefits of the energy transition, escalating system costs and policy lag.

The Consumer Grid Summit was established by RACE for 2030 to tackle this directly. Using consumers and everyday life as the north star for grid design, we create a high-trust, safe space for leaders from all sectors to work together and seize the opportunity to drive lasting change.

From shared learning to action

The Consumer Grid Summit is the culmination of a broader body of work undertaken by RACE for 2030.

This includes targeted research and expert discussion papers, structured interviews with senior sector leaders, our series of Grid Transformation Masterclasses, and ongoing engagement with consumer, industry, regulatory and government stakeholders.

Productive tensions and respectful challenge

A shared vision does not mean agreeing on every detail. The Consumer Grid Summit intentionally brings contrasting perspectives to the same table. Network, technical and regulatory expertise rigorously tests commercial feasibility, while consumer advocacy keeps the dialogue anchored to fairness, trust and lived experience.

By creating space for respectful challenge, participants test long-held assumptions, work through trade-offs and convert complex provocations into clear areas of sector alignment.
