The project “Taking the Heat Out of EV Charging” investigates whether existing distribution transformers can accommodate significantly higher EV fast-charging loads than currently assumed, without reducing transformer life. The work proposes instrumenting field transformers with advanced temperature monitoring probes to study their thermal response during short-duration, high-power EV charging cycles.
